Getting Started

Welcome to your first steps toward becoming a DayZ modder!

You don't need expensive tools or tons of prior knowledge to begin—just time, patience, and a willingness to learn. Everyone starts somewhere, and with dedication and practice, you will get there.

I highly recommend watching YouTube tutorials, since you can pause, rewind, and learn at your own pace.

Step 1: Setting Up DayZ Tools
1

Open Steam and go to your Library

Navigate to your Steam library where all your games are listed.

2

Enable Tools in Steam

In the top-left corner above your game list, click the drop-down menu labeled 'Games' and make sure 'Tools' is checked.

3

Install DayZ Tools

Once enabled, you'll see a bunch of tools appear. Scroll down until you find 'DayZ Tools'. Install it.

4

Launch DayZ Tools

After installing, launch DayZ Tools. Don't worry—it will look overwhelming at first. Take a deep breath. You'll get the hang of it.

5

Configure Settings

At the top of the launcher, click 'Settings'. If you're limited on space on your C: drive, you can change the path for your Project Drive (aka P Drive) here.

6

Mount P Drive and Extract Game Data

Under the 'Tools' section: Click 'Mount the P Drive', then click 'Extract Game Data'. You might get a popup—feel free to read it, but it's safe to continue.

Step 2: Essential Software

Text Editor

Please refer to my free software page to pick an editor that might fit your style best. I recommend either VSCode or Sublime Text.

Build Tools

Mikero Tools or DayZ Addon Builder. If you would like more information about Mikero, please refer to my free resource page.

Step 3: Learning

I personally always recommend starting with clothing — it's probably the easiest way to learn the most, and let's be honest, everyone loves cool-looking gear. In this section, I'll only be sharing videos focused on clothing and simple items so you can easily follow along step-by-step.

TWE4KS

I've never had the pleasure of speaking to this guy personally but his videos are fantastic. He gives a lot of useful information from the get-go and after watching this video you should have everything you need to get started.

I actually learned off of her videos first and later moved to watching TWE4KS as he goes a little further with more things that I was interested in learning.
